Review HP Envy m6-1101sg Notebook

HP sends yet another multimedia laptop dubbed Envy m6-1101sg into the race with the familiar aluminum casing. The 15.6-incher is delivered with Windows 8 as the operating system. At a price of around 800 Euros (~$1063), HP’s Envy belongs to the more affordable models of this price range. The owner of this laptop should not be a fan of computer games because the gaming performance is rather poor owing to Intel’s dual-core i5-3210M (2.5 GHz) and AMD’s dedicated Radeon HD 7670M. The buyer should not like working outdoors either since the 15.6-inch LCD screen is not AR coated. http://www.askbattery.com/hp-3115m.html Replacement battery for HP 3115m

Case

The casing of our test device is virtually identical with HP’s Pavilion m6-1050sg sister model. HP’s Envy m6-1101sg is only available in black. The casing of the 15.6-incher is comprised of aluminum and chrome. Regrettably, the known stability problems have been adopted from the sister model. The casing particularly yields toward the center when pressure is applied. It looks similar on the quite thin display lid. It warps easily and also yields extremely under slight pressure. The hinges also have room for improvement. They do not do their job very well. The display teeters quite strongly when it is adjusted. http://www.askbattery.com/hp-elitebook-2170p.html Replacement battery for HP EliteBook 2170p adapter

We noticed the quite large cover for the laptop’s innards positively. Only one single screw has to be removed to open the maintenance cover. Swapping the battery is also very easy. We did not find any sharp edges or manufacturing flaws on our test device. HP’s Envy weighs approximately 2.4 kg.

Performance

Intel’s dual-core i5-3210M processor is the laptop’s heart. The CPU based on the Ivy Bridge architecture has a default clock of 2.5 GHz. When sufficiently cooled, the processor’s clock can be increased to 3.1 GHz (1 core) for a short time via Turbo Boost. The processor’s performance should be sufficient for demanding applications such as HD video editing. The i5-3210M should even be able to cope with up-to-date 3D games. The chip manufacturer specifies a thermal design power (TDP) of 35 watts.

Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 card is integrated in the 3210M processor. The performance of the integrated graphics card is 60% higher than that of the former HD Graphics 3000 according to the manufacturer. The processor-integrated graphics card supports DirectX 11 and Shader 5.0. HP’s Envy also sports AMD’s dedicated midrange Radeon HD 7670M graphics card. AMD’s graphics card, with 480 Unified Shaders and 716 million transistors, features 2 GB of DDR3 memory. The dedicated graphics card’s core clock is 600 MHz. Either the HD Graphics 4000 or the Radeon HD 7670M is enabled depending on the required computing power to save energy and extend battery life.

The user can fall back on an 8 GB DDR3 working memory in HP’s Envy m6-1101sg. HP relies on an HDD from Western Digital. This hard drive spins at 5400 revolutions per minute and provides a storage capacity of 1 TB.

Processor
We tested the dual-core i5-3210M’s performance with Cinebench R10 and the latest version of Cinebench R11.5. Out test device achieved 4255 points in Cinebench R10’s (32 bit) single-rendering test. For comparison, Dell’s Inspiron 15R SE only managed 4149 points with Intel’s quad-core i7-3612QM processor. The two additional cores in Dell’s Inspiron 15R SE multimedia laptop first pay off in Cinebench R10 32 bit multi-rendering test. HP’s Envy accomplished 8694 points in contrast to 15804 points achieved by Dell’s 15.6-incher. The CPU stably maintained a clock of 2.9 GHz during the tests due to Turbo Boost. The performance difference related to the two additional cores also becomes evident in Cinebench R11.5 (multi). HP’s Envy managed 2.89 points here while Dell’s Inspiron 15R SE achieved a 93% higher performance.

System Performance
Normally, we use PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7 for our system performance tests. Regrettably, PCMark Vantage is presently not supported by Windows 8 so we only have the latest version for our tests. Our test device reaped in 2392 points in PCMark 7. Consequently, HP’s Envy is on a par with Dell’s Inspiron 15R SE featuring an i7-3612QM processor and AMD’s Radeon HD 7730M graphics card. Asus’ N56VZ-S40444V with a quad-core i7-3610QM and Nvidia’s GeForce GT 650M graphics card is only marginally better with 2505 points (+5%). The good total score is particularly based on the Computation and Creativity tests. The application performance is absolutely sufficient for routine tasks. Even picture and video editing should not be a problem for the 15.6-incher.

The user of HP’s Envy m6-1101sg has a lot of storage space available. The manufacturer opted for an HDD with a capacity of 1 TB from Western Digital. The hard drive only spins at 5400 revolutions per minute. However, the performance is quite good for a 5400 rpm hard drive. We ascertained an average transfer rate of 83.5 MB/s in the test. The access rate of 17.1 ms is also good.

The system would certainly be faster with an SSD. However, this cannot be expected in this price range. Even a 7200 rpm HDD could present a performance boost. An example for this would be Samsung’s 550P7C-S02DE featuring Hitachi’s Travelstar 7K750 HTS727575A9E HDD that achieved an average transfer rate of 96 MB/s in HDTune. It is possible for the user to replace the hard drive because the innards are easy to access. More information about hard drive performance can be found in our special article.

Graphics Card
AMD’s DirectX 11 capable Radeon HD 7670M graphics card is employed when a higher graphics performance is demanded. We use Futuremark’s known 3DMark series for analyzing the performance. The 15.6-incher achieved 5028 points in 3DMark Vantage. Dell’s Inspiron 15R accomplished 7002 points (+39%) using AMD’s Radeon HD 7730M in this test. Dell’s model also has the lead on HP’s Envy m6-1101sg in 3DMark 11. However, the performance difference is now only 32%.

Compared with an Nvidia graphics card, the performance of our test device is on a par with Asus’ K55VM-SX064V featuring a GeForce GT 630M (1288 points). The performance difference is noticeable 87% in the approx. 200 Euros (~$265) more expensive Asus N56VZ-S4044V with Nvidia’s GeForce GT 650M. The 15.6-incher with AMD’s Radeon HD 7670M is clearly inferior here.

Gaming Performance
It was possible to play Mafia 2 and the rally simulation Dirt 3 in high details and a resolution of 1366x768 pixels on HP’s Envy m6-1101sg multimedia laptop. A game should run with at least 30 frames per second for a smooth gameplay.

However, smooth gaming was not even possible in medium details and a resolution of 1024x768 pixels with the older Formula 1 simulation F1 2011. The 15.6-incher only rendered 25 fps while Asus’ K53SK-SX021V alongside AMD’s Radeon HD 7610M accomplished 52 fps. The game recurrently crashed within a short time on maximum details and the Full HD resolution. Consequently, we could not benchmark it. This problem could be related to the new Windows 8 operating system.

Older games should generally run smoothly in medium details and a resolution between 1024x800 and 1366x768 pixels. The expectations have to be lowered even more for newer games. Our gaming list provides an overview of which games run on which graphics card.

Following the good rates in system noise, we ask ourselves whether the low fan activity affects the laptop’s temperature development. HP’s CoolSense technology allegedly thwarts a too high temperature on the casing. This is absolutely true for office use. The top reached a maximum of 33.1 °C and the bottom heated up to a maximum of 34.7 °C. HP’s Envy m6-1101sg is completely within the target area. But what about load?

We powered the multimedia laptop for several hours in an unrealistic stress test. Furmark and Prime95 ran simultaneously for this test. The casing’s temperature naturally increased as time passed. However, the laptop was still fairly cool in most areas even after several hours. For example, the wrist rest reached a maximum of 32.5 °C. The multimedia laptop only surpassed 40 °C at two measuring points. Nevertheless, the results are absolutely satisfactory. HP’s CoolSense technology seems to work in this model.

We also rechecked the 15.6-incher’s performance after the stress test. The dual-core processor even ran Turbo Boost with approx. 2.9 GHz during the stress test. We started 3DMark 06 directly after the test. Here, we did not ascertain any major performance differences (8790 vs. 8801 points).

Speakers

A sound system named Beats Audio is installed in HP’s 15.6-inch Envy m6-1101sg. The name sounds promising in any case. Two speakers are located above the keyboard and a subwoofer is found on the multimedia laptop’s bottom. The sound-system is very impressive. The sound is good and the bass is perceptible. Even the maximum volume is completely sufficient. However, Asus’ N56VZ-S4044V does a better job owing to an external subwoofer, which produces a somewhat better sound. External speakers can be connected via the 3.5 mm audio jack or the HDMI port.

Energy Management

Power Consumption

The multimedia laptop consumed between 8.8 and 12.3 watts in idle. These rates are within the expected range for a laptop with this configuration. The power consumption quickly increased during load. The 15.6-incher required around 48.4 watts when Furmark and Prime95 ran simultaneously. The system consumed 35 watts when we only ran Prime95. These rates are also good. For example, HP’s ProBook 6570b using the same CPU but no dedicated graphics card consumed more power during load (54 watts). The included 90 watt power adapter is fully sufficient.

Conclusions about the battery runtime can be derived from the power consumption. The second main factor is of course the battery. HP relies on a 6-cell lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 62 Wh in its 15.6-incher. We ascertained the battery’s performance in a total of four different scenarios. We first determined the maximum battery runtime using Battery Eater’s Reader’s test. The multimedia laptop lasted for 6 hours and 40 minutes on minimum performance settings.

We wanted to simulate everyday surfing behavior in a more practical test. Here, we enabled Wi-Fi and set the brightness to roughly 150 cd/m². The 6-cell battery lasted for 4 hours and 55 minutes. Playing a DVD in maximum brightness was possible for 4 hours and 14 minutes without the power cord.

We again used Battery Eater for the last test, but the Classic test this time. It determines the laptop’s battery performance in load. HP’s Envy m6-1101sg shutdown after 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Review Asus G46VW Notebook
The Asus G Series of notebooks carries the much-respected Republic of Gamers (ROG) branding and is the manufacturer’s solution to high-end portable gaming. Notebookcheck is no stranger to the Asus roster having reviewed a number of top models in 2012 including the 17.3-inch Asus G75VW, G75VX, 15.6-inch G55VW, and the 3D-enabled G75V. The expectedly high performance and surprisingly low system noise earned each model high scores in the DTR category. http://www.askbattery.com/asus-x53-series.html Asus X53 adapter

This review focuses on the G46VW, which is Asus’ first 14-inch notebook to sport the established ROG logo. Our $999 test model (G46VW-BHI5N43, exclusive to the U.S. for now) is equipped with a Core i5-3210M, a GTX 660M with 2 GB DDR5 VRAM, 8 GB RAM, a SATA II 750 GB Seagate HDD, and a pair of speakers that are the same size as those on the 17.3-inch G75. Asus has promised models with Thunderbolt support and higher resolutions beyond 1366x768 pixels to launch at a later date. Find out here if this 14-inch gamer lives up to its namesake and what unfortunate compromises have been made in order to shrink the familiar form factor. http://www.askbattery.com/x53b.html X53B adapter

It’s not unusual for gaming notebooks to have exotic and sometimes overwhelming designs, but the G46VW takes the safe route with a chassis style similar to its older and larger siblings. This means the notebook will be instantly recognizable to ROG fans even from a distance since the smooth, rubberized matte jet black finish and large dual rear vents are signature designs for the G Series lineup. Those who have experience with a G75V will feel right at home with the G46VW and may even be more impressed with the latter as it offers stiffer hinges and brushed aluminum palm rests. Gone are the hints of silver surrounding the keyboard; everything shares the same glare-free shade of black from top to bottom for a more uniform and agreeable impression. Compared to its closest competitor, the Alienware M14x, the G46 is both lighter (2.5 kg vs. 2.9 kg) and thinner due to the slanting 2.3 cm - 3.8 cm profile. http://www.askbattery.com/asus-x53by.html Asus X53BY adapter

In terms of build quality, the base is very resistant to warping (side-to-side twisting) and only minimal depressions can be seen when applying pressure with a finger. The centers of both the keyboard and outer lid surfaces continue to be the weakest locations and are where depressions can be most visible. Fortunately, the G46 does not demonstrate any large or significant amount of flexing around its base to cause worry. http://www.askbattery.com/asus-x53e.html Asus X53E adapter

While the tough base leaves a good impression, the display is regrettably average in construction. Side-to-side twisting is a bit too easy for our liking and the inner plastic bezel surrounding the display has an obvious thin plastic feel despite its sleek appearance. The outer lid is somewhat weak to pressure as well especially down the center. Though these faults are nowhere near awful and can even be considered adequate, they do not exhibit the kind of construction quality as does its visually matching base nor do they reflect its $1000 base price very well. Aesthetically, however, the G46 has hit all the right marks. http://www.askbattery.com/asus-x53s.html Asus X53S adapter

The model in review is equipped with the Intel Core i5-3210M, a common standard-voltage Ivy Bridge CPU amongst many newer mid-range notebooks. The 35 Watt TDP dual-core processor is rated at 2.5 GHz and has no issues maintaining its advertised 2.9 GHz Turbo Boost speed in the G46VW as seen in our stress test section below. If on power saver mode, both cores will idle at 1.2 GHz. According to Asus, future G46 models are expected to carry the more powerful quad-core i7-3610QM. For more information and benchmarks on the 22 nm i5-3210M, see here.

Alongside the integrated Intel 4000 graphics, the highlight of the G46 is its discrete Nvidia GTX 660M with 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM. This Kepler GPU is more commonly seen in larger 15.6-inch gaming notebooks such as the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 and Asus G55VW, so its appearance in a 14-inch chassis makes it that much more prominent. The dGPU idles at 135 MHz/202.5 MHz (Core/Memory) and maxes at 950 MHz/1250 MHz according to GPU-Z. For more information and benchmarks on the 28 nm GTX 660M, see here.

For RAM, our G46 houses 2x 4 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SODIMM modules from Hynix for a total of 8 GB. The modules can be easily accessed via a small Philips screw hatch underneath and are the only user-removable parts. Accessing the motherboard will require a small Torx wrench to remove the entire panel underneath. It is obvious that Asus did not intend to allow users quick access to the motherboard as do the current G55 and G75 series with their removable hatches. Gamers and DTR users may find themselves upset at the closed nature of the G46, a characteristic we would have never expected from an ROG product.

DPC Latency Checker shows recurring high latency peaks even with wireless radios inactive. The creators of the program have stated that its compatibility with Windows 8 is still unreliable, so the results should be taken with a grain of salt.

The synthetic CPU-oriented benchmarks place the g46VW on equal standing against the similarly-equipped and larger Lenovo Y580 (i5-3210M, GTX 660M). For example, Cinebench R11.5 rendering results are essentially equal (2.87 vs. 2.89) and so are the single-core and multi-core SuperPi (648s vs. 656s at 32M) and wPrime (592s vs. 532s) benchmarks, respectively. Though the IdeaPad completed wPrime calculations a bit more quickly, the majority of notebooks sporting the same i5-3210M CPU had results in the 570s to 590s range instead. In other words, CPU performance has not been artificially reduced in the G46 due to the smaller form factor of the system. The Ivy Bridge i5-3210M continues to perform at roughly the same level of the Sandy Bridge i7-2620M, the previous Intel dual-core champion of the last generation.

Since PCMark Vantage resulted in errors under the Windows 8 OS, we instead provide PCMark 7 and Windows 8 Experience Index results in its place. Note that the Experience Index for Windows 8 is calculated differently than on Windows 7, so the numbers should not be compared directly.

The final PCMark 7 score of 2707 points is relatively low thanks to the 5400 RPM HDD. Even the 14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad U410 with its ULV i5-3317U and less powerful GT 610M graphics had a similar final score of 2724 points in the same benchmark. As another example, the recently reviewed 13.3-inch Sony T13 (i5-3317U, Intel HD 4000) returned 4441 points due to its SATA III SSD. Users who are accustomed to notebooks with SSDs or even Ultrabooks will indubitably notice the weighty performance drop on the G46VW during everyday tasks. For word processing and general office work, this notebook is near the bottom of our recommendation list. For such tasks, the well-received Asus Zenbook series are highly recommended instead.

Storage Devices
The G46 uses a 9.5 mm thick SATA II Seagate Momentus 750 GB 5400 RPM HDD as standard with SSD and hybrid SSD options to come in the future. There is also an mSATA slot for compatible SSDs with RAID 1 and 0 support. For our review model, however, the system is driven solely by the Seagate HDD.

With an average transfer rate of only 72.8 MB/sec according to HD Tune, the 5400 RPM drive is fairly sluggish. Even subjectively, Windows 8 operates slowly and nowhere near as snappy as experienced on SSD-powered devices. For comparison, the Momentus 750 GB 7200 RPM HDD in the Asus G75VX returned an average of 93.8 MB/sec and even the 5400 RPM Hitachi in the budget Acer TravelMate P253-M returned an average of 84.6 MB/sec in the same benchmark. The effect on general performance is alarming and a large step down from Ultrabooks in general. Fortunately, gamers will at least appreciate the large capacity of a mechanical drive. http://www.askbattery.com/asus-x54hy.html ASUS X54HY adapter

For our growing benchmark and comparison list of notebook HDDs and SSDs, see here.

Under the limitations of the 1366x768 resolution display, the 2 GB GTX 660M was able to blast through our typical medium and high graphics settings for the tested range of games. Guild Wars 2 was the only tested title that fell below 30 FPS with all settings maxed mainly due to the extremely resource-intensive supersampling algorithm. If disabled, the game will more easily maintain 30+ FPS. Even so, the GTX 660M can be considered a bit overkill for the majority of PC games to date with respect to the 720p display. As a result, future titles (such as Crysis 3) will be more likely to play fluidly at high settings on the resolution-restrained G46VW. Check out our dedicated page on the GTX 660M for additional games and benchmarks.

When idle, the surface temperatures on the keyboard and palm rests are not all that different compared to its load temperatures. Much of the produced heat will emanate from the bottom rear quadrants with one particular spot reaching above 40 degrees C even under cold 16 degrees C ambient conditions. The rear quadrants have potential to become very warm, but important contact areas such as the keyboard and anterior quadrants remain relatively cool for user comfort. Running on battery produced disastrous results to synthetic benchmark scores. 3DMark 06 completed with only 7072 points, or about half of its initial 14242 score. The CPU score, however, remained unchanged (3653 vs. 3660 on battery). GPU throttling occurred multiple times a minute and was signified by severe drops in frame rates. Gamers and others relying on strong GPU performance should make sure the G46 is plugged into the grid before use.

Battery Life

Asus provides a 6-cell 6260 mAh lithium polymer battery with no other choices. The module is built-in and not designed to be user-removable, so carrying a backup battery is not an option.

Our more realistic WLAN Test puts the notebook on a looping script to simulate typical browsing conditions at 150 cd/m2 brightness (setting 7/10) on the Balanced profile with integrated graphics only. Battery Eater recorded a runtime of 4 hours and 11 minutes under these conditions.

It’s not every day that a manufacturer launches a 14-inch notebook with a GPU as powerful as a GTX 660M and so Asus deserves some praise for offering a small, sleek, well-built, and quiet model with the high-end Nvidia GPU. Being able to play any PC game up to the time of review at maximum or close to maximum settings on a 14-incher will surely get the attention of any gamer. When combined with the respectable battery life and relatively small size, the G46 becomes easy to pick up and play as well.

Review MSI GX60 Notebook

The gaming giant MSI is particularly known for its attractively priced multimedia laptops (GE60 & GE70) and its powerful high-end machines (GT60 & GT70). It can be said that the GX60 released in late 2012 is an intermediary model. http://www.askbattery.com/asus-g73jh-tz012v.html ASUS G73JH-TZ012V charger

The 15 incher promises a lot of gaming power with its installed Radeon HD 7970M. At least on paper because the 2.3 to 3.3 GHz Trinity CPU does not exactly belong to the fastest of its kind. No wonder that the A10-4600M has only been used in entry-level and midrange laptops until now. Most manufacturers rely on the efficient Ivy Bridge generation from Intel for their gaming products. We checked whether the quad-core’s performance noticeably decreases using diverse benchmarks.

The other equipment in the GX60 is throughout impressive. The US-American AC1-013TW model we were provided with features two small 64 GB mSATA SSDs that work together in a RAID 0 mode, in contrast to the German A10797287B counterpart (~EUR 1200). A 750 GB HDD from Western Digital is installed as the secondary hard disk.

The models are otherwise largely identical. A four GB DDR3 RAM bar is in both working memory banks. Matching the Full HD screen, the manufacturer also installs a Blu-Ray combo drive (burns CDs & DVDs). MSI opted for Windows 8 64 bit as the operating system.

The Taiwanese company continues to use flashy gamer looks although the current design trend is going toward elegance and simplicity. While the metal wrist rest makes a fairly high-end impression, the other surfaces look quite cheap. Glossy plastic elements might look chic on press pictures, but their high smudge susceptibility soon becomes annoying in practice.

Fingerprints and dust particles not least accumulate on the display frame, the keyboard base and the useful function bar. However, the biggest shortcoming is the sensitive lid that clearly affects the quality impression. We would have appreciated a matte, aluminum finish like on the more expensive GT60 model. If you generally like it less obtrusive, you should prefer Clevo’s W350ET barebone (Schenker XMG A522) or P150EM (Schenker XMG P502).

The GX 60 also has to accept criticism for its large size. The gaming laptop towers over most 15 inch contenders with dimensions of 395 x 267 x 55 millimeters. For example, the just mentioned Schenker XMG P502 "only" has a size of 376 x 255 x 51 millimeters. The GX60 also weighs more (3.4 vs. 3.2 kg). At least the chassis features good stability. Merely the vents on the bottom yield noticeably under higher force.

We would say that the build quality is good. Apart from minor details (display bezel / lid transition), MSI has done a good job. Unfortunately, the GX60 cannot compete with the quality standard of Asus’ G75 or Alienware’s M17x R4, but the latter devices are also much more expensive.

The A10-4600M is a mobile quad-core processor from AMD’s low-cost Trinity range. In contrast to the latest Intel generation, the quad-core is still based on small 32 nm structures. With a TDP of 35 watts, the power consumption is within the range of Core i5 dual-core contenders.

Like Intel’s Ivy Bridge CPUs, the Trinity models can overclock dynamically. The A10-4600M’s Turbo ranges from 2.3 to a maximum of 3.2 GHz. If we only look at the clock rate, its speed should roughly be on a par with the Core i7 3610QM (2.3 - 3.3 GHz). Regrettably, the Trinity CPUs are not quite as efficient, i.e. the performance per MHz is much lower. Overall, the performance is only adequate for the entry-level sector.

AMD is miles ahead of the competitor with its integrated graphics chip. Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 doesn’t stand a chance against the Radeon HD 7660G. However, the chip is rather insignificant since a dedicated graphics card is installed in the GX60.

CPU Performance

The scores in the CPU benchmarks do not necessarily indicate a potent gaming laptop. Quite the contrary: 2.01 points in Cinebench R11.5 is everything but worthy of reference. Even the weak Core i3 3110M that does not feature Turbo calculates roughly 20% faster (2.41 points @ HP’s ProBook 4540s). Intel’s speedy 2.4 - 3.4 GHz Core i7 3630QM accomplishes three times as much (6.46 @ Deviltech’s HellMachine). We will scrutinize how much impact the processor has on 3D programs in a moment.

The Radeon HD 7970M is currently AMD’s fastest laptop graphics card. Like its desktop counterpart, the high-end model is based on the GCN architecture manufactured in a 28 nm process. AMD tries to justify its high power consumption (100 watt TDP) with 2.8 billion transistors, 1280 Unified Shaders and two gigabytes of GDDR5 VRAM (256 bit interface). The manufacturer clocks the card with 850 MHz (core) and 1200 MHz (memory).

Among others, the review of Alienware’s M17x R4 underlines that the Radeon HD 7970M is a very good option for gamers. Alongside a strong Intel CPU, the graphics card can compete with the main contender from Nvidia. The GeForce GTX 680M only wins in some games.

Back to topic: MSI installs a cutting edge driver with the Catalyst 12.11. That is also very necessary because AMD’s graphics switching (codename: Enduro) caused a lot of problems in the past. Lousy identification ratio, modest performance in low settings, black screens after driver installation: The problems were multifarious particularly in the Clevo P150EM and P170EM barebones.

Although Nvidia’s Optimus technology still performs better (lower performance loss, higher reliability, more visible support), AMD has taken a big step forward with the Catalyst 12.11. Gamers no longer have to get annoyed about incorrectly assigned 3D programs since the driver features a global setting option (see right screenshot). Games are reliably started with the Radeon HD 7970M when the option is set to "Maximize Performance".

Perfect: the menu "Switchable Graphics Application Settings" now stores all installed and executed programs. The user can create and modify profiles similar to Nvidia. "exe" files can be easily assigned to a specific graphics card. The menu of the first drivers was still quite unsatisfactory. However, Enduro still lacks a convenient update function and an indicator for GPU activity (Nvidia has already had this for years). The GX 60 can be connected to as many as three monitors owing to Eyefinity technology.

GPU Performance

AMD’s weak processor does not have much significance in extremely graphics-heavy applications, such as 3DMark 11. With a GPU score of 6423 points, the GX60 overtakes Deviltech’s Devil 6700 by about 8%. Its GeForce GTX 680M accomplished 5947 points in this test (slightly older driver).

That sounds like an excellent performance, doesn’t it? It is as long as only the GPU scores are considered. The overall score is often dismayingly low. HD 7970M laptops equipped with an Intel CPU reach approximately 100% higher scores in 3DMark 05, 06 and Vantage.

The GX60 exhibits a good performance again in the Unigine Heaven 3.0 benchmark. The laptop rendered 57.7 fps using 1920 x 1080 pixels, high details and default tessellation. The GTX 680M in Schenker’s XMG P502 recently accomplished 57.6 fps.

Last but not least, MSI touts the GX60 with a promising RAID 0 array. Both small 64 GB mSATA SSDs from SanDisk are to easily defeat the competition. This promise may still be true when looking at the sequential read rate - over 600 MB/s in the AS SSD benchmark remain out of reach for most SATA III models. Even the 512 GB version of the extremely swift Corsair Neutron GTX (Schenker’s XMG P722 PRO) has to be satisfied with 514 MB/s.

However, as soon as focus is put on smaller files, the exultation quickly vanishes. 8 MB/s in the 4K test and 57 MB/s in the 4K-64Thrd test are rather moderate for SSD conditions. The 128 GB model of Samsung’s successful SSD 830 is 2.5 times better in 4K with 21 MB/s and 5 times better in 4K-64Thrd with 291 MB/s. The big shock comes first in the write rates though. With a sequential rate of not quite 44 MB/s, the RAID 0 array drops below the average HDD level (CrystalDiskMark still recorded 88 MB/s). For comparison: Both mSATA members accomplished a 9x better 391 MB/s in the GT70.

http://www.askbattery.com/asus-g73jw-ws1b.html ASUS G73JW-WS1B charger ,

The distance to the SSD competition is also gigantic with smaller files. Most solid state drives can only smile wearily at a 4K rate of 12 MB/s and a 4K-64Thrd rate of 5 MB/s. The somewhat older but still popular Crucial Read SSD M4, for example, settles to 50 and 158 MB/s respectively (128 version @ Gigabyte’s U2442N). Basically, we do not deem the RAID 0 array a good idea. A "conventional" 2.5 model would make a subjectively faster impression in practice.

But the GX60 also sports a 750 GB HDD besides the solid state drive. MSI relies on a product from Western Digital dubbed WC75000BPKT-22PK4. CrystalDiskMark certifies the SATA II drive a very good performance. Only few HDDS surpass 114-115 MB/s in the sequential benchmark. The drawback of 7200 rpm is a fairly loud operating noise.

When looking at the gaming results, we wonder whether MSI tested the hardware combination thoroughly in advance.

Although the GX60 could sometimes outperform Intel devices, equipped with a GeForce GTX 670MX or GTX 675MX, in extreme conditions (1920 x1080, maximum details), the Radeon HD 7970M often dropped to the level of the actually weaker GeForce GT 650M or GTX 660M in medium settings (1366 x 768, high details). In the worst case, the refresh rate was only just above the processor-integrated Radeon HD 7660G chip.

CPU-heavy tracks, such as Guild Wars 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Hitman Absolution and Assassin’s Creed III can only be played with restrictions if at all. It is surprising to what extent the slow Trinity CPU affects the Radeon HD 7970M. The GX60 would likely score much better with a low-end dual-core processor from Intel’s Core i3 or Core i5 range. The HD 7970M is normally sooner comparable with a GeForce GTX 680M.

After extensively studying the benchmarks, the retail price no longer seems particularly attractive. Less expensive laptops, such as Schenker’s XMG A522 often accomplish a comparable gaming performance. MSI should have invested its budget in a faster CPU. The Radeon HD 7970M can only rarely exploit its true potential. A detailed benchmark list can be found below this article.

Temperature

One of the GX60’s biggest strengths is its moderate temperature development. Owing to the casing’s clever build, the wrist rest never exceeds a temperature of 30°C even during demanding 3D programs. The chassis settled to decent 26°C in idle mode. The temperatures were also absolutely reasonable during load. The laptop only reached just below 40°C at the vent.

The user does not have to worry about the hardware, either. The graphics card "only" reached 80°C after one hour of stress testing. The processor climbed to acceptable 70°C according to Core Temp, but the clock rate occasionally dropped below two GHz (throttling). Note: Our first test device recurrently crashed in the stress test.

Power Consumption

The power consumption is within limits when the Radeon HD 7660G is primarily active in idle use. With 13-24 watts, the MSI laptop consumes roughly the same power as Deviltech’s GTX 680M contender Devil 6700 (16-22 watts). The GX60 is a bit more energy-efficient during load (85-138 vs. 100-149 watts).

The strong, 87 Wh lithium ion battery accomplishes good to very good runtimes. The 15 inch laptop lasts for around seven hours without the power outlet in ideal conditions (minimum screen brightness, low load).

We always perform our Wi-Fi test with a brightness of approx. 150 cd/m². This resulted in almost five hours of wireless Internet entertainment. A DVD ran for roughly 3.25 hours in maximum brightness. We ascertained a minimum runtime of around one hour.

All said, we regrettably cannot fully recommend the GX60. As our benchmark course illustrates, the lame AMD CPU partly extremely slows down the Radeon HD 7970M. The performance loss is so high in some areas that the frame rate drops to a midrange level.

We would have expected a more sensible hardware setup from an alleged gaming expert. The surprisingly low price is no argument. The 15 inch Clevo P150EM barebone is available for approx. EUR 1300 with an Intel quad-core and a Radeon HD 7970M. Its advantage is a more consistent performance without nasty outliers.

Both mSATA SSDs are also a double-edged sword. The excellent sequential read rate contrasts the poor performance in small files. In addition to that, there is the unusual keyboard layout and casing’s sensitive surfaces.

But that is enough complaining because the GX60 also has its good sides. Besides the generous connectivity and low temperature development, we have to mention the first-rate TN screen. MSI has put particular focus on the sound. The built-in 2.1 system clearly excels most other laptops.

Nevertheless, it is not easy to come to a final verdict. The GX60 is sooner designed for casual gamers considering the CPU issue. Ardent gamers will currently not get around an Intel quad-core.

Performance

The dual Core i7-2620M (2x2.70 GHz, 32nm) has already provided power in business machines, such as HP’s EliteBook 8460p. The processor’s Turbo Boost 2.0 can clock up to 3.4 GHz (one core) and the "Dynamic Range @ Turbo Frequency Limits" can even add a bit of clock providing there is a sufficient cooling. We will devote ourselves to the themes clock rate and throttling in "Temperature". http://www.cbattery.net/dell-inspiron-1750.html Dell Inspiron 1750 battery

The dual core 2620M (TDP 35 watts) is always installed when a 45 watt 2630QM (quad core) goes beyond the cooling limits as it would be the case in 13 inch devices. It is frequently used in high performance 13 inchers, e.g. Acer’s Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-2628G12nbb or Dell’s Vostro 3350, due to the CPU’s low idle power consumption. http://www.cbattery.net/asus-x72f.html Asus X72F Battery

The Radeon HD 6630M isn’t actually designed for subnotebooks because of its strong performance (and high power consumption). Nevertheless, Sony installs it into the SA, SB and CA range. Moreover, there is adequate 8 GB of RAM and an extremely fast Samsung RAID0 SSD that bids a memory capacity of 256 GB. Again, the S range typical Speed Mode switch that disables the HD 6630M is present. http://www.cbattery.net/asus-a42-m70.html Asus A42-M70

The i7-2620 scores 9452 points in Cinebench R10 Multi. That is a bit more than an i5-2540M with 9154 points (also 4 threads). Its quad core brother, 2720QM (8 threads), manages 14273 points (+35%) in test notebooks. We see: The processing speed’s difference compared with a Core i5 is low.

Is the slim and light 13.3 incher’s cooling efficient enough to keep the CPU performance upright during consistent load? We look at the i7-2620 in various other devices. Almost all 2620M candidates reach about 9450 points (+/- 150) in Cinebench R10 Multi. Only the Apple Macbook Pro 13 inch 2011-02 MC724LL/A fails this rate due to throttling. http://www.cbattery.net/dell-xps-15.html DELL XPS 15 battery

Four of eight laptops achieved 3.1 points in the Cinebench R11.5 CPU 64 bit test. The Vaio SA2 test device doesn’t belong to them because it is on the same level as the Vostro 3350 and XMG A501 with 3.0, respectively 2.9 points (-3%). Again, it is only the aforementioned MacBook that merely reaches 2.6 points due to throttling (-16%). Short: The i7-2620M calculates on the expected level in pure CPU performance. The cooling seems sufficient for normal load scenarios. http://www.cbattery.net/acer-aspire-8920g-series.html Acer Aspire 8920G battery

What does the processing performance look like together with CPU, graphics, RAM and SSD? PCMark Vantage and PCMark 7 provide the information. The total results of 10833, respectively 3448 points are very high, but not as good as expected in the case of Vantage. The considerably less expensive consumer, XMG A501 (Crucial Real SSD C300) achieves 10833 PCMark Vantage points with the same CPU (PCM7 score not available). http://www.cbattery.net/toshiba-satellite-l500-series.html Toshiba Satellite L500 battery

PCMark 7 (3448 points) really likes the Samsung SSD disk because only gaming laptops and workstations equipped with a 2630QM or 2920XM (+SSD) can reach higher scores. The Alienware M18x (4579), the Fujitsu Celsius H710 WXP11DE (3695) and the XMG P501 PRO (4208) would be mentioned here. Normal 2620M laptops without SSD are located as low as 2000 points (Vostro 3350).

The named behemoths also have better graphic cards, and thus their advantage should actually be greater. Therefore, it seems remarkable that a small 13.3 incher can close in on the machines of the gaming and workstation sector with the mere support of an SSD. http://www.cbattery.net/hp-pavilion-dv8000.html HP Pavilion dv8000 battery

The reason for this high score in application performance is the Samsung SSD’s fast accesses. They drive the PCMark Vantage’s HDD score up to 15599 points (Vaio Z13 with quad SSD: 13055). The speedy accesses let the music, productivity and communication score skyrocket. The productivity score is 13282 points (Vaio Z13: 9818). High performance laptops with a rotating hard disk (7200 rpm) achieve 6200 at best (e.g. HP Elitebook 8540w). http://www.cbattery.net/hp-pavilion-dm1.html HP Pavilion dm1 battery

The synthetic DirectX 11 benchmarks, such as Unigine Heaven 2.1 (11 fps), confirm that the AMD Radeon HD 6630M’s performance is close to that of an old HD 5650 or a GT 525M (12 fps). The currently popular GT 540M (13 fps) in consumer laptops also seems to be a tiny bit faster. http://www.cbattery.net/dell-xps-m1530.html Dell XPS M1530 battery

3DMark11 (P 1023) runs a bit slower with a GT 540M (P ~950 points above all test devices). The Dell Vostro 3550, with the same CPU/GPU configuration as our Vaio, achieves 990 points and is thus almost equal. To achieve more points, an HD 6770M (~1500) or a GT 555M (~1300) would be due. However, such GPUs are only built into 15 and 17 inchers. http://www.cbattery.net/hp-593554-001.html HP 593554-001

The classic 3DMark 2006 (1280x1024) finishes on the Radeon midrange category with 7057 points, which is slightly below a GT 540M (~8000 @XMG A501 with 2620M). A GT 525M (7400) together with a strong CPU achieves about the same score. For example in Dell’s XPS 15z (2620M). http://www.cbattery.net/acer--as10d75.html Acer AS10D75

Gaming Performance

The AMD Radeon HD 6630M (1024 MB) is a DirectX 11 GPU and the successor card of the 2010 HD 5650. It clocks with 485/800 MHz (core/memory) in the test device and corresponds to the manufacturer’s specifications. The GPU could present games, such as Dirt 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Mafia 2 or Battlefield, in high details smoothly in the previous test devices (Vostro 3450/3550, ThinkPad Edge E420s). High details are 1366x768 pixels in our case. http://www.cbattery.net/hp-g61.html HP G61 battery

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

The shooter can be played on 1366x768 pixels and on high detail levels on the Vaio. However, 32 fps don’t leave any room to switch to the native WXGA++ resolution. The GT 540M is 5% faster in this game, but a GT 525M (-6%) is surpassed. Only 28 fps were achieved in the Vostro 3550 with the same CPU but older driver. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-l08n6y02.html Lenovo L08N6Y02 battery

System Noise

The Vaio SA2 delivers a mixed show in regard to noise. The Vaio is always audible in idle (Stamina mode) and the fan is never off. However, the user has to get very close to the 13 incher in order to hear this quiet whirr of 30 dB (A). Occasional load while surfing on the Web or other simple tasks lets the level increase gently to 32 dB (A). http://www.cbattery.net/hp-pavilion-dm4.html HP Pavilion dm4 battery

A downright pussyfooter in idle - perfect, or? But that doesn’t stay that way for long. The 13.3 incher mutates to a noisy companion when the processor and/or Radeon graphics (Speed mode) are put under load. The clear noise reaches a level of 41 dB (A) quite fast (3DMark Vantage, Cinebench R11.5). We measure 47.8 dB (A) in the stress test (CPU&GPU). At least the fan rotates constantly and hardly ever changes its speed. http://www.cbattery.net/sony-vgp-bps13a_q.html Sony VGP-BPS13A/Q

Temperature

Since the fan also rotates constantly in Stamina mode (HD 3000 enabled) during idle, waste heat isn’t accumulated. Consequently, the figures stay in the blue, low range. The selective temperatures rise quickly during maximum stress over several hours. We measure 48 degrees Celsius in the vent’s vicinity. However, this is only a selective rate. The average is 37 degrees Celsius. The fact that the wrist-rest doesn’t heat up beyond 33 degrees is pleasing. http://www.cbattery.net/acer-aspire-5740g.html Acer Aspire 5740G battery

Battery Life

There is a wide margin of 50 watts between idle and high load (CPU/GPU). The Sandy Bridge Core i7 and the HD 6630, as the biggest power consumers, can restrain their power requirement very adaptively depending on the load. This proves that Turbo Boost works. The idle power consumption is between 9 watts (Stamina mode, Intel HD, minimum brightness) and 21 watts (Speed mode, HD 6630M, maximum brightness). http://www.cbattery.net/samsung-aa-pb4nc6b.html Samsung AA-PB4NC6B

3DMark 2006 consumes 49 watts. It’s even 60 watts in the stress test. We see the very moderate CPU throttling confirmed here because the power consumption remained constant during the stress test (4x 2.4 GHz @multi CPU stress). Thus, performance fans don’t have to fear that they will "lose" a lot of power. The compact 90 watt power adapter (286 grams) is very well designed for the maximum power consumption. http://www.cbattery.net/dell-xps-m1710.html Dell XPS M1710 battery

Verdict

The last time we had so much computing power in a light 13 incher was with the 13.1 inch lightweight, Vaio VPC-Z13Z9E, whose successor (VPC-Z21M9E) is currently being launched onto the market. The fast Core i7 2620M (2x2.7 GHz), together with the RAID0 SSD with fast read and write speeds, ensures gigantic scores in system performance. Loading and installing programs within fractions of a second. The boot process takes 10 seconds. http://www.cbattery.net/hp-511872-001.html HP 511872-001 battery

Gamers and multimedia designers will take delight on the AMD Radeon HD 6630M. The dedicated GPU doesn’t impair mobility thanks to switching to the Stamina mode (hardware switch). The runtimes of 3:30 to 4:50 hours (without battery slice) aren’t awesome but acceptable for the powerhouse. http://www.cbattery.net/acer-as10d5e.html Acer AS10D5E

The workmanship and the plain looks will appeal to demanding office users. Unlike our first Vaio SB1 test device, the case’s stiffness is very good. The lid is kept firmly in place and has an unyielding surface. In line with the still low weight (1652 grams) and the slim design, the user will be able to successfully make a smart appearance in public. http://www.cbattery.net/hp-compaq-business-notebook-6720s.html HP COMPAQ 6720s battery

But it’s not just showing off with pretentious hardware that the Vaio VPC-SA2Z9E/B is good at. Touchpad and keys have a big, work suitable layout. The typing feel convinces with a clear pressure point and firm stroke. Professionals and business users will like the battery slice option, the built-in 3G modem and the docking port. A desktop replacement is created with these supplies, which can be very strong on the one side and can last long on the other. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-s10-2-2957.html Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 2957 battery

The anti-glare and bright WXGA++ screen prevents a "Very Good" in the rating because of weak colors (no sRGB color spectrum, low contrast) and the narrow viewing angles. The screen is suitable for the subnotebook’s mobile purpose. But we would have hoped for a premium display, as was the case in the Vaio VPC-Z13Z9E (sRGB), in the premium price range of almost 2400 euros. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g570.html LENOVO G570 Battery

A very high noise and high temperatures during extreme load are additional drawbacks. However, these drawbacks are irrelevant during normal use because waste heat and noise are far less striking here. http://www.cbattery.net/asus-x72jr.html Asus X72JR Battery

The Vaio VPC-SA2Z9E/B will certainly not be for everyone due to the high price of almost 2400 euros. On the other hand, there aren’t any alternatives should 3D performance, a low weight, business suitability (matt, input devices, docking port) and awesome application performance in 13.3 inches be desired. There are a few light 13.3 inch laptops with a similar processor and partly even with SSD. However, the combination with de-activatable 3D performance is still something rare. http://www.cbattery.net/toshiba-pa3757u-1brs.html Toshiba PA3757U-1BRS

One alternative at a similar price is the Sony VAIO Z21Q9E/B with an external AMD Radeon HD 6650M (connected via LightPeak cable), which will be launched onto the German market in the next days. Consumers will take a look at the Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG-2628G12nbb (starts at 1200 euros), a 13.3 incher with Core i7-2620M, 120 GB SSD and NVIDIA GeForce GT540M. http://www.cbattery.net/fujitsu-fmv-a8270.html Fujitsu FMV-A8270 battery

Review Toshiba Tecra R840-11E Notebook

Toshiba wants to address demanding business customers who want a slim and robust laptop with the Tecra R840-11E. The light notebook of nearly 2 kg is equipped with an Intel Core i5-2520M, a 4 GB DDR3 RAM and a 320 GB hard disk. The 14 inch screen that can display a maximum resolution of 1366x768 pixels is anti-glare.

The processor’s incorporated HD Graphics 3000 is used for graphics. It borrows the needed video memory from the installed RAM. This graphics solution is more than sufficiently sized for the 14 inch display and office tasks.

In addition to WLAN 802.11 b/g/n and the latest Bluetooth version (3.0+HS), the Tecra R840-11E also offers fast UMTS/3G, a port replicator (docking port) and an ExpressCard slot (34mm).
Toshiba’s recommended retail price for the Tecra R840-11E is 1349 euros.

Besides the model, Tecra R840-11E, Toshiba also has other models from this range with various hardware configurations available: R840-109 (Core i5-2520M, AMD Radeon HD 6450M), R840-116 (Core i7-2620M, AMD Radeon HD 6450M), R840-128 (Core i5-2410M, Intel HD Graphics 3000) and the R840-14F (Core i3-2310M, Intel HD Graphics 3000). The street prices vary from just under 1000 euros up to 2000 euros for the top models.

The partly 2 cm thin business laptop makes a good first impression in terms of looks. The black case strikes with its plain look that is underlined by its fine lined surface texture and both silver display hinges. The design corresponds 1:1 to the model Tecra R850-11P (15.6 inch display, Core i5 2410M, Intel HD Graphics 3000) that we were allowed to test for Notebookcheck in May 2011.

The display lid can easily be opened single-handedly and is very stable. We weren’t able to press against the display from the back even with a lot of force. The Toshiba Tecra R840-11E even successfully endured the display bezel twisting test.

Both display hinges have a highly polished cover that provides a good contrast to the otherwise black case. The hinges have a good grip and keep the display secure in every position.

A basic, black keyboard and a pleasantly sized touchpad materialize when the laptop is opened. However, it must be said that the notebook has a limited opening angle. The pad is supposed to be fairly resistant to environmental influences, but dust and fingerprints are quite visible after use.

The stability over the entire notebook is ensured despite its small dimensions of 19.9x341x239 mm. Neither the display bezel nor the wrist-rest or the keyboard yielded under pressure.

An Intel Core i5 2520M processor with a base clock of 2.5 GHz does its job inside the Tecra R840-11E. The single cores can be increased up to 3.2 GHz by the Turbo Boost technology. It happens, however, completely automatically. The user can’t intervene.

Detailed information about the Intel Sandy Bridge dual core processors can be found in this article on Notebookcheck.net (CPU comparison test).

The Intel HD Graphics 3000 that is used in the Tecra R840-11E is directly incorporated into the CPU and is DirectX 10 compatible. Moreover, the Intel HD Graphics 3000 can fall back on the processor’s 3 MB level 3 cache.

This laptop has a 4 GB DDR3 memory (1333 MHz) available as its RAM. The notebook can be expanded up to 8 GB via the second empty S0 slot when required.

The maximum clock of 3.2 GHz was only reached at the beginning of the simulated stress test where several programs ran simultaneously. The hotter the CPU cores got, the less the turbo mode was used. The CPU clock settled between 2.5 and 2.7 GHz. However, it never fell short of the CPU’s base clock of 2.5 GHz. That is to say, throttling couldn’t be observed even in an extreme scenario.

The Toshiba Tecra R840-11E had to go through many tests in the benchmark marathon. In addition to the cross-component test tools, such as PCMark 05, PCMark 7 and PCMark Vantage, which assess the entire bundle (CPU, GPU, memory and hard disk), the hard disk’s speed was also tested.

The Tecra R840-11E reaches 3089 points in the Cinebench R10 Single Rendering (64 bit) test. It is 10374 points in multi core rendering (64 bit). While the multi core test’s score is on the expected level, the single core clearly lags behind its 2520M relatives, who usually reach around 5000 points.

We were curious about that and ran Cinebench R10 several times. The results were astounding: two of four runs were on a level of 5000 and the other two were beyond the pain limit. Fortunately we could run the benchmark on a second, identical test laptop. The irregularities that our Toshiba test device presented couldn’t be replicated by the second one. Therefore, we assume that it is a device-specific problem.
The Cinebench R10 Single Rendering (64 bit) test recorded a score of 5135 on the second, identical laptop.

In comparison: The HP Probook 6460b, which is also equipped with a 14 inch screen, Intel Core i5 2520M and HD Graphics 3000, achieved considerably better results in these benchmarks: CB R10 Single: 5051; CB R10 Multi: 10554. The bigger brother, Toshiba R850-11P (i5-2410M CPU) achieved 4521 in the Cinebench R10 Single test, respectively 9460 points in the Multi Core.

The notebook scores 5888 points in PC Mark Vantage. The similarly equipped Probook 6460b achieves a considerably higher score of 7703 points. Toshiba’s 15 inch version, R850, presents a score of 5913. The score can first be lifted beyond 10000 points when a solid state drive (SSD) is used. It would also improve the subjectively perceived speed.

We check for possible latency problems, which could lead to synchronization errors with external hardware at the interfaces, with the DPC Latency Checker program. The Toshiba Tecra R840-11E is inconspicuous here. Thus, there is no danger of limitations, especially in the field of audio and video.
The incorporated HD Graphics 3000’s graphic and 3D performance wasn’t really impressive in the 3D benchmark programs. The dedicated graphics achieved a weak score of 3650 in 3DMark06. However, this is still within the expected range. The same applies to 3DMark05. The Toshiba laptop managed 5328 points here, which is comparable with a Geforce 9500M GS or a Radeon HD 4570.

The 3DMark11 benchmark couldn’t be executed due to DirectX 11 incompatibility.

A 2.5 inch disk from Hitachi is used as the hard disk in the Tecra R840-11E. The HTS723232A7A364 supplies a gross memory capacity of 320 GBs. The HTS723232A7A364 is in an upper range with a processing speed of 7200 revolutions per minute and the SATA II interface.

The Hitachi hard disk is equipped with a 3D motion sensor that parks the disk’s write / read heads immediately into a safe position in case of intense vibrations. This is supposed to prevent a possible headcrash and data loss. According to the manufacturer, drops from up to 76 cm are to be withstood without data loss.

The average transfer rate of 108.8 MB/s was measured with HDTune in the test. We could only evoke a bit less in CrystalDiskMark 3.0. CrystalDiskMark 3.0 determined a smooth rate of 101 MB/s, whereby we ran it five times. The burst rate was 150.7 MB/s at a CPU capacity of 3.1 percent in the test.

Gaming Verdict

We tested if it’s possible to also play on the Sandy Bridge CPU’s incorporated HD Graphics 3000 (DirectX 10.1 driver: 15.10.2279) with a few games. The frame rates that we could determine in Fifa 11 and Mafia 2 were on the expected, even if low, level and correspond to the test rates in our database.
The Tecra R840-11E suffers a clear setback in Drift 3. Rather than the expected 66 (low), 29 (medium) and 18 (high) frames per second, we could only determine 49, 23 and 18 fps.

We briefly tested which games run on this incorporated notebook graphics with a few up to date games. The results can be found in our comprehensive database "Computer games on laptop graphic cards".

Battery Life

The laptop’s consumption is between 7.3 and 11.1 watts in idle, respectively very light load. The rates climb up to 33 watts, respectively a maximum of 55.6 watts during full load. The laptop only consumes 0.05 watts when it’s turned off and a just as modest 0.4 watts in standby mode.

The tool, BatteryEater, which we use for determining the battery life, has various measurement scenarios with different pre-settings. The Classic test assesses the minimum runtime when the hardware is put under load, WLAN is enabled and maximum display brightness is set. A complete battery charge was used up in only short 89 minutes in this test scenario. Reader’s test was started in the second run. It simulates reading a text document with a disabled WLAN adapter and in minimum display brightness. The battery lasted for 503 minutes here, which equals 8 hours and 23 minutes.

The Toshiba had to be plugged into an outlet after 6 hours and 45 minutes of "surfing via WLAN" at pleasant display brightness. You can watch a 138 minute DVD movie in one piece in battery mode. Longer movies aren’t possible. The Tecra R840-11E’s battery charge time is 222 minutes, so almost 4 long hours.

Verdict

Toshiba has created a conveniently small and light business laptop with the Tecra R840-11E. The black magnesium case’s workmanship is exemplary. Neither the display bezel nor any other parts can be depressed on the Tecra R840-11E.

The Core i5 2520M’s and incorporated HD Graphics 3000’s available performance is absolutely sufficient for office and Internet applications. The notebook offers many installed communication options, such as wireless LAN, Bluetooth and 3G (UMTS/HSPA) as a special treat.

The anti-glare 14 inch laptop screen allows outdoor working. However, the screen could do with a better contrast. The built-in 320 GB hard disk is very fast and gives the notebook the necessary write / read performance.
Positive: An discreet soundscape in office mode, a good battery life of about 6 - 8 hours depending on the application scenario.

The recommended retail price for the Tecra R840-11E with this configuration of a Core i5 2520M, a 4 GB DDR3 RAM and a 320 GB hard disk is 1349 euros. The street price at the time of the review was still steep 1200 euros.

Review Dell Vostro 2520 Notebook

Dell provides the Vostro 2520 range for frugal business customers. The models of this range cost less than the Vostro 3560 series laptops. The least expensive model of the 2520 range was available for 309 Euros (~$400) at the time of this review. However, it did not include a Windows operating system. Dell sells a pre-configured version over the known internet shops or it can be customized in Dell’s online shop. We tested a pre-configured model. The device we were provided with sports Intel’s dual Core i3-2328M processor and its integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 takes care of the graphics output. The system can fall back on 4 GB of working memory. Data is stored on a 500 GB hard drive. A DVD burner is also installed.

We used HP’s 650 (Intel Pentium B970, Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge)) and Asus’ Pro P53E-SO102X (Intel Core i3-2330M, Intel HD Graphics 3000) to classify the laptop.

Case

The Vostro 2520’s casing is mainly made of plastic. Only the base unit’s top is metal and gives the laptop a much higher quality look. HP’s 650 and Asus’ Pro P53E-SO102X do not sport any metal parts. The Vostro 2520’s casing features a dark, matte gray color, which Dell has dubbed "London Slate". The silver-gray plastic bezel that surrounds the base unit supplies a color contrast. Regrettably, Dell has decided to not completely rely on matte surfaces. The keyboard’s bezel and the gaps between the keys are glossy and downright attract fingerprints.

The base unit makes a robust impression. It only dents marginally under pressure. It yields more intensely when the casing is pressed in the keyboard’s lower left area. The casing’s stiffness is also acceptable in view of the price. It can only be warped slightly when held at its two front corners and produces a noise in that case. The Vostro 2520 does not have to fear a comparison with the Vostro 3560’s casing. Nevertheless, the latter exhibits an overall more stable build.

The lid’s back is coated with a ribbed, rubber layer that protects the back from bumps and scratches. The lid is quite easily warped and its back can be dented without much effort. The hinges keep the lid firmly in position. It’s not possible to open the lid with only one hand because the hinges are pulled too tight.

Dell supplies a range of affordable office devices for business customers and private users with the Vostro 2520 series. Our test device provides more than enough power for routine computer use, i.e. word processing, internet communication, video rendering.

At the time of this review, our test device was listed at 399 Euros (~$517). The low-end device was price-tagged with 309 Euros (~$400) and was powered by Intel’s Celeron B820 processor, featured 2 GB of working memory and a 320 GB hard drive. If you buy the laptop in Dell’s online shop, you can also opt for Windows 7 or 8 and Intel’s Core i5-3210M processor.

Processor

Our test device is powered by Intel’s Core i3-2328M processor. It is a new CPU that comes from Intel’s previous Sandy Bridge processor generation. The CPU clocks with 2.2 GHz. The Core i3 does not feature Turbo. The Core i3-2328M is identical to the Core i3-2330M with one difference: the Core i3-2328M does not support Intel’s Small Business Advantage Tools. That is a collection of utilities from Intel for the business field and, for example, enables locking the computer’s USB ports.

The CPU finished our stress test (Prime95 and Furmark run simultaneously) at full speed (2.2 GHz) in AC mode. The GPU mostly clocked at its maximum of 1100 MHz. It was sometimes downclocked to 1050 MHz. The CPU also clocks at full speed on battery power, but the GPU’s clock is reduced to 650 MHz.

The Cinebench tests were also completed at full speed. The test scores are on the expected level. The Pentium B970 in HP’s 650 is clearly surpassed. Asus’ Pro P53E-SO102X (Intel Core i3-2330M, Intel HD Graphics 3000) is the clear winner of Cinebench 10’s GL tests. Surprisingly, it is clearly defeated by the Vostro 2520 in Cinebench R11.5’s GL test. We presume that it is due to the newer driver of Dell’s laptop.

System Performance

The laptop runs quickly and smoothly on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Ubuntu Linux. The PCMark test results are on the expected level. Both HP’s 650 (Intel Pentium B970, Intel HD Graphics (Sandy Bridge)) and Asus’ Pro P53E-SO102X (Intel Core i3-2330, Intel HD Graphics 3000) are defeated. We believe this is due to the Vostro 2520’s swifter hard drive.

Gaming Performance

The Vostro 2520 is not designed for professional computer gamers. The hardware is at most enough for low resolutions and low quality settings. However undemanding games, such as the FIFA series, still run smoothly even in higher quality levels on Dell’s laptop.

Battery Life

Power Consumption

http://www.askbattery.com/dell-312-1163.html Dell 312-1163 adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-312-1242.html Dell 312-1242 adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-hcjwt.html Dell HCJWT adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-kj321.html Dell KJ321 adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-m5y0x.html Dell M5Y0X adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-nhxvw-prrrf.html Dell NHXVW PRRRF adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-t54f3.html Dell T54F3 adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-t54fj.html Dell T54FJ adapter , http://www.askbattery.com/dell-x57f1.html Dell X57F1 adapter ,

The Vostro 2520 consumed 6.8 to 13.2 watts in idle mode. Dell clearly undercuts Asus’ Pro P53E-SO102X (10.2 to 15.3 watts) with these rates. HP’s 650 is defeated marginally in the minimum power consumption (9.3 watts). Surprisingly, the Vostro proved to be much power hungrier than Asus’ laptop during the stress test (Prime95 and Furmark run simultaneously). Although both laptops are virtually identical technically, Dell’s device consumes 52 watts, a whole 10 watts more than Asus’ laptop. The power consumption of HP’s 650 ranges between the two other laptops with 47.5 watts. It does not look much better for the Vostro 2520 in medium load (3DMark 06). With a power consumption of 40 watts, it consumes 5.9 watts less than Asus’ device. HP’s 650 (31.6 watts) outdoes both contenders.

Battery Runtime

The Vostro 2520 achieved a runtime of 8:27 h in idle (HP 650: 6:32 h; Asus: 8:55 h). We use Battery Eater’s Reader’s test to simulate idle mode, i.e. the screen is set to minimum brightness, the energy savings profile is enabled and the Wi-Fi modules (WLAN, Bluetooth) are off. The Vostro managed a runtime of 1:33 h in load (HP 650: 1:17 h; Asus: 1:49 h). Battery Eater’s Classic test is used for the load test. For this, we set the screen to maximum brightness, enable the high-performance profile and wireless modules.

Dell’s notebook lasted for 5:24 h in the Wi-Fi test (HP 650: 4:44 h; Asus: 4:12 h). Websites are automatically opened every 40 seconds by a script in this test. Energy saving mode is enabled and the screen’s brightness is set to approximately 150 cd/m². If you are looking for a laptop to regularly watch DVDs, the Vostro 2520 will not disappoint you. One battery charge was enough for playing DVDs for 5:10 h (HP: 4:01; Asus: 4:05 h). The screen is set to maximum brightness, energy savings mode or a higher profile (should the DVD not run smoothly) is used and the wireless modules are off.

Dell has to be praised for the battery runtimes. The company extracts much longer times from the Vostro 2520 in the realistic Wi-Fi and DVD tests than Asus or HP do. Particularly since Asus’s laptop sports a higher capacity battery (Asus: 56 Wh, Dell 48 Wh, HP 47 Wh).

Verdict

The advantages of Dell’s Vostro 2520 are found in the good battery life, decent application performance, 24 month warranty and matte screen. The screen’s contrast, black value and brightness are more than acceptable for the laptop’s price range. The device can easily cope with routine application scenarios and provides more than enough power for most computer users. Regrettably, Dell has not placed much value on good maintenance. The entire laptop has to be disassembled to exchange the hard drive or clean the fan. The Vostro 2520 could also be a touch less noisy. It is an office laptop and you would want a quiet surrounding here.

Users who put value on low noise development should look closer at HP’s 650. It produces less noise over the entire load range. The advantage of Asus’ P53E-SO102X over the Vostro 2520 is the superior keyboard including number pad.

Review Lenovo IdeaPad S300 Subnotebook

Looking for a slim, handy subnotebook with a decent GPU? While most Ultrabook manufacturers choose to sacrifice graphics performance in order to achieve better run times, emissions and dimensions, Lenovo have chosen a different path in the 13.3-inch IdeaPad S300. As a result of the low price, the model is equipped with a Core i3-2365M (17 W CPU - Low Voltage) instead of a Core i5-3317U, which most Ultrabooks favor. It is also equipped with an AMD Radeon HD 7450M, which enables it to offer more graphics performance (AMD Enduro graphics switching - the AMD GPU and the Intel HD 3000). http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g575.html Lenovo G575 Battery

The laptop seems like the perfect package and is available for 549 Euros (~$710). Let us take a quick look at the competition: the flat, 13-inch HP Envy 6-1000sg Ultrabook (740 Euros/~$957 - i5-3317U and AMD Radeon HD 7670M) and the 15.6-inch Acer Aspire V5-571G (starting at 470 Euros/~$608 - GeForce GT 620M). For the price of our test model, the Aspire V5-571G can throw in a Core i3-2367M and for another 100 Euros (~$129) the buyer can get an i5-3317U.

In short: want a slim 13-inch laptop with an Intel CPU and decent gaming performance? We present the Lenovo S300. The question remains whether this model will only bring joy to gamers, or if it offers some standard subnotebook features as well? Find out it in the following review. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g575a.html Lenovo G575A Battery

Our test model sports a silver-gray case. Alternatives are available, but they do not include the Radeon GPU: a pink and a red version can be found in the Lenovo shop.

The manufacturer deceives buyers a little about the dimensions of the laptop: if we include the feet, the model is 26 mm (1.02 inches) thick (at the back). The laptop has a ventilation opening placed on the bottom, and, although the feet add about 5 mm (0.2 inches) to the laptop, thanks to them, the laptop’s cooling system has enough breathing room. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g575e.html Lenovo G575E Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g575g.html Lenovo G575G Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g575l.html Lenovo G575L Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g575m.html Lenovo G575M Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-g575.html Lenovo IdeaPad G575 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-g575a.html Lenovo IdeaPad G575A Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-g575e.html Lenovo IdeaPad G575E Battery

The laptop has poor sturdiness. The base of the laptop is very weak: it can be pushed down to the table with medium force. The hinges are another weak point: although they hold the panel stiffly, they let it wobble considerably. In addition, when the laptop is opened up to its maximum opening angle, they bend the case slightly. Finally, the lower third of the display cover is susceptible to pressure.

The material gaps and surfaces are clean, but they could have been better if a magnesium or aluminum alloy had been used for the case. The display cover and the bottom of the laptop are covered with a silver lacquer. This can be a problem, as, after this laptop has been used a while, wear marks will start to appear, due to rubbing and scratches. This would not happen if the manufacturer had stuck to a plain plastic surface. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-g575g.html Lenovo IdeaPad G575G Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-g575l.html Lenovo IdeaPad G575L Battery

The bottom has no flaps. The dismantling procedure for this model is similar to that of the S400 - all screws have to be removed (even the ones under the feet) to remove the bottom of the laptop. The hardware manual details the procedure and informs the user how to swap out the HDD (under the keyboard), the RAM (1 slot) and the PCI Express Mini card (WLAN/Bluetooth). The manual will even instruct the user on how to take apart the cooling system and keyboard. This will allow the user to clean out their cooling system and keep it performing at 100%.

Performance

The Intel Core i3-2365M is a rarely used "Low Voltage" processor for subnotebooks and Ultrabooks. Its two cores are clocked at 1.40 GHz, but do not have Turbo Boost like the i5 alternative for the S300 (3317U). http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-g575m.html Lenovo IdeaPad G575M Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g470.html Lenovo G470 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g470a.html Lenovo G470A Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g470ah.html Lenovo G470AH Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-g470g.html Lenovo G470G Battery

The combination with the AMD dedicated GPU, Radeon HD 7450M, is only available in the MA145GE model (our test model), which contains the i3-2365M. An i5 CPU + Radeon GPU combination is not yet available. A Seagate Momentus Thin HDD (7 mm/0.28 inches thickness) with a capacity of 500 GB is installed in our test model. The manufacturer does not offer an SSD or Hybrid for this model. The RAM amounts to 4 GB in a single slot.

System Performance

The program performance, measured using PCMark Vantage (2008) and PCMark 7 (2011), is quite disappointing. Our test model falls behind the V5-431 (running on Celeron) by 11% in PCMark 7. This model only has HD Graphics on-board. Our test model also loses against the V5-571G (GT 620M) by 42%. This gap in performance may have been caused by the higher computation score of the Celeron, as shown in some CPU tests (for example, Wprime +40 %, see the Processor section). In addition, the Computation Sub score (V5-571G; GT 620M) is around 43% better. With the exception of the HDD score, all other sub scores were good. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-b570.html Lenovo B570 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-b570a.html Lenovo B570A Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-b570g.html Lenovo B570G Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-b570.html Lenovo IdeaPad B570 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-b570a.html Lenovo IdeaPad B570A Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-b570g.html Lenovo IdeaPad B570G Battery

Finally, in the PCMark Vantage benchmark, our S300 test model takes the expected lead, but only against HD graphics systems. The V5-571G is still in the lead.

Graphics Card
The AMD Radeon HD 7450M (1,024 MB) operates as a dedicated GPU alongside the Core i3-2365M (1.4 GHz). The HD Graphics 3000 IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) of the Sandy Bridge CPU is used for switchable graphics. AMD’s Enduro technology can automatically switch to the AMD GPU when necessary. It is not possible to manually turn on the HD 7450M permanently. The user can switch off the switchable graphics feature in the BIOS. This will lead to the Intel IGP running alone.

The 3DMarks do not paint a good picture of the HD 7450M. In the classic 3DMark 2006, the GT 620M (+92%) of the V5-571G is clearly faster. The Radeon HD 7670M (+94%) is just as fast. Although the CPU dependence is left out of the 3DMark 11 benchmark, the alternative GPUs still have a great lead (+87 and +91%).

Gaming Performance
Gamers who want to play on a subnotebook should ask themselves: rather a GeForce GT 620M (Aspire V5-471G/571G) or an AMD Radeon HD 7450M (test model)? The HD 7500G (IGP) in the AMD Trinity-based 13.3-inch Samsung 535U3C might also be an interesting candidate. Or would you rather save up till you can get a HD 7670M, like in the HP Envy 6 Ultrabook? http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-v370p.html Lenovo IdeaPad V370P Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-t430.html LENOVO ThinkPad T430 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-t530.html LENOVO ThinkPad T530 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-t430s.html LENOVO ThinkPad T430s Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-t430si.html LENOVO ThinkPad T430si Battery

The games in the table paint a clear picture: the GT 620M is the best for gaming. This GPU is twice as fast as the HD 7450M in the S300. The strong i5-3317U of the V5-571 probably contributes greatly to this high performance, but even the cheaper Core i3 Aspire V5-471G (GT 620M) seems to offer better performance than our test model.

The HD 7670M (HP Envy 6) also places behind the GeForce GPU. So putting down more money for HP’s Ultrabook does not translate into more gaming power. We also noticed in the Aspire V5-171, that a HD 4000 IGP (i5-3317U) could achieve the gaming performance delivered by our S300 test model.

In short: the gaming performance of the Radeon HD 7450M in the S300 is quite disappointing. The Radeon GPU is only slightly ahead of the HD 4000 IGP. As such, the Lenovo S300 is not the best gaming laptop out there. We are excited about the Aspire V5-471G test model, as that 14-inch model should be quite similar to the S300. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e120.html Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E120 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e125.html Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E125 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e320.html Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E320 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e325.html Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E325 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e430.html LENOVO ThinkPad Edge E430 Battery

Noise Emissions
The 13.3-inch model is a comfortable companion at low load and while idle. The fan rarely shuts off completely. While it operates at a lower speed, we measure 32-33 dB(A), which is barely audible. The hard disk is even quieter than the fan at its lowest speed (30.4 dB(A)).

At high load, the emissions change. We put the IdeaPad S300 in a rather unrealistic situation in this test: Prime 95 (CPU) and FurMark (HD 5470M) ran for 2 hours simultaneously. The noise emissions rose up to 41 dB(A). The emissions would remain at 39 dB(A) if the user were running 3DMark2006 or a game. This constant noise emission is bearable. The competitor, V5-571G (GT 620M), had similar emissions to our test model, but due to the high pitch of its fan, we had to take away some points.

While idle, the IdeaPad S300 remains cool in the keyboard and hand-rest regions. The top and bottom of the laptop have similar temperatures: both regions are around 30 degrees Celsius (86 °F). The temperature emissions rise by a few degrees in office use at low load. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e430c.html LENOVO ThinkPad Edge E430c Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-570.html Lenovo ThinkPad 570 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-570e.html Lenovo ThinkPad 570E Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-e530.html Lenovo ThinkPad E530 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-x220t.html LENOVO ThinkPad X220T Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-x220-tablet.html LENOVO ThinkPad X220 Tablet Battery

The use of the notebook on the lap should not be a problem, even in high load situations, as long as the ventilation opening on the bottom of the laptop is not blocked by cloth. At load, the temperatures rise significantly (up to 50 degrees (122 °F) here and there), especially at hot spots, which can be found above and near the middle of the keyboard. This stress test simulates a worst-case scenario and as such the user will probably never encounter such high temperatures.

The stress test ran for multiple hours on the CPU and HD 7450M GPU, but the S300 kept its cool. HWinfo records a constant clock speed of 1.4 GHz (CPU). The CPU temperature shown by HWinfo reaches a max of 80 degrees (170 °F), but we caution the reader that this value may be slightly inaccurate.

Battery Life

Power Consumption
The 13-inch model is a power saver (Ultrabook standards). This is an absolute necessity as the laptop battery has a meager capacity of 32 Wh. We noticed that, while idle, the low voltage i3 system requires as much power as a 13-inch Ultrabook. Core-i5-3317U systems require between 4-6 (idle min.) to 10 Watts (idle max). http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-x220i-tablet.html LENOVO ThinkPad X220i Tablet Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-x1.html LENOVO ThinkPad X1 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-hybrid-series.html LENOVO ThinkPad X1 Hybrid Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570a.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570A Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570d.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570D Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570m.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570M Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570n.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570N Battery

In our CPU+GPU stress test, the consumption rises to 40 W. The laptop requires around 26 W in the CPU stress test (Prime95 Multi). The Asus UX32A (i3-2367M) requires 41 W. Games, or other programs which cause high load for the Radeon HD 7450M, raise the power consumption to around 30 W (test with 3DMark 06).

Battery Life
The 32 Wh capacity will not set new run time records. While idle, the 13.3-inch notebook can run around 5:07 hours. This is an unrealistic number as the laptop will rarely ever run at minimum brightness, all wireless modules off and with the CPU and GPU idle.

The WLAN test is closer to the reality of everyday use: the battery is empty after 1:55 hours. On the second run, the run time dropped to 1:50 hours. The WLAN test does not cause high load on the S300. A script is run in the browser and it loads new websites and, sometimes, videos (Flash) every 40 seconds. The Radeon graphics were not active for this test. The TFT brightness was dropped to around 150 cd/m² (two levels). Other 13.3-inch subnotebooks offer more, especially when their manufacturers use batteries with high capacity: the Sony Vaio SVT1311M1ES (5:16 hours; 45 Wh), the Asus UX32A-R3001V (4:22 hours; 45 Wh), the Acer Aspire V5-431 (3:00 hours; 37 Wh), etc. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570nt.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570NT Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y570p.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y570P Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y580.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y580 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y580a.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y580A Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y580m.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y580M Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y580n.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y580N Battery

Verdict

Lenovo wants to create an Ultrabook replacement. Their 13.3-inch model is cheaper (550 Euros/~$712) and offers a dedicated GPU (Radeon HD 7450M) for occasional gaming. Sadly, Lenovo bet on the wrong horse: the Radeon GPU may be better than the HD Graphics 3000 IGP of the Core i3, but it cannot match the competition, like the GeForce GT 620M, in terms of performance.

The weak gaming prowess is not the only disappointment. The run time of 2 hours is too short (WLAN test). The Aspire V5 competition uses low-capacity batteries, but runs about 1:15 hours longer (15-inch). Both our test model and the 15-inch gaming laptop have poor brightness.

The workmanship of our test model is riddled with flaws and weaknesses, as is the workmanship of the Acer models. The matt surfaces are nice, but the malleability of the case cannot be ignored. The keyboard of the Aspire model is better than that of the Lenovo S300. The keys are quiet on both laptops, but the spongy typing feel, caused by the weak keyboard base, puts the S300 behind. http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-y580p.html LENOVO IdeaPad Y580P Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-u260.html Lenovo IdeaPad U260 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-u300s.html LENOVO IdeaPad U300s Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-u310.html LENOVO IdeaPad U310 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-u410.html Lenovo u410 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-z480ax.html LENOVO IdeaPad Z480AX Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-z380.html LENOVO IdeaPad Z380 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-z480.html LENOVO IdeaPad Z480 Battery http://www.cbattery.net/lenovo-ideapad-z580.html LENOVO IdeaPad Z580 Battery

We like the low temperature and noise emissions of the IdeaPad S300. The low weight of 1,600 grams (~3.5 pounds) is also quite nice.

The only other competitor in this price class would be the Acer Aspire V5-471G, which uses the GeForce GT 620M. This flat 14-inch laptop is also sold with a low-capacity battery, but the price of 499 Euros (~$646) makes this weakness bearable. We recently tested the good-looking and powerful Aspire V5-571G. The 14-inch version will follow shortly.

Review Sony Vaio SV-E1712F1EW Notebook

Sony is not a manufacturer that many users would associate with affordable entry-level notebooks - yet the Japanese electronics giant offers inexpensive models in its E-series, varying from 14- to 17-inch form factor. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps23_b.html Sony VGP-BPS23/B battery

Now that we have taken a look at the middle 15-inch model (Vaio SV-E1511V1EW), today we review the SV-E1712. This 17-inch notebook comes in various configurations, starting at 500 Euros (~$635). But equip it with a quad-core processor, Blu-ray drive, and a Full HD display and it can easily go over the 1000 Euros (~$1273) mark. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgpbps23_b.html Sony VGPBPS23/B battery

Such hardware seems to be overkill for a simple multimedia notebook. Our test candidate, a Sony Vaio SV-E1712F1EW, relies on a Pentium B980 CPU, 4 GB of RAM, and a 500 GB HDD, which reduces the price to 550 Euros (~$699). The Radeon HD 7650M is here too - it is a standard feature on all of the models in the range. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bpl23.html Sony VGP-BPL23 battery

Sony should not worry about the lack of competition: in particular, the new Trinity APUs by AMD are widely used in this price range and are installed in the HP Pavilion g7 for example. But which manufacturer has put together the most attractive package?

Similarly to its small sister model, the Vaio SV-E1712 comes in an interesting, two-color look: black and white plastic (other combinations also available) make for a diverse combination that distinguishes the notebook from the usually dull masses. Apart from the color, Sony has chosen not to experiment with the rest of the design - unfortunately that includes the dirt-prone glossy surfaces. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgpbpl23.html Sony VGPBPL23 battery

Without the use of light metals such as aluminum, the Vaio cannot score points with compact dimensions (38 mm thickness) or low weight (3.2 kg). The mobility is not among the notebook’s strong points, but it has, for this price range, a properly good stability and workmanship. Pressure on the case is met with minimal deformation, for example, in the area of the DVD drive. In detail, some gaps and material transitions could be improved, but overall we found no major shortcomings to be criticized. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps23.html Sony VGP-BPS23 battery

The display is held in position by two tight hinges, which wobble a bit after opening. Both the base unit and the display lid are made of simple, but solid plastic, which leads to a proper rigidity. Overall, the SV-E1712 places just ahead of the HP Pavilion g7, but still has room for improvement.

While the Core i3, i5, and i7 make up the medium and high-priced segments of Intel’s portfolio, the Pentium and Celeron models make up the entry level. In the Vaio SV-E1712F1EW we find the recently introduced Pentium B980, which is based on the older Sandy Bridge generation. The 32nm dual-core processor runs at 2.4 GHz, but must do without Turbo Boost and other features, such as Hyper-Threading. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgpbps23.html Sony VGPBPS23 battery

AMD’s Radeon HD 7650M is in charge of the video output. Interestingly, the Enduro technology, which automatically switches between the AMD GPU and the integrated Intel graphics (HD Graphics), has not been implemented - the HD 7650M is constantly active, which in turn leads to increase in energy consumption and shorter battery life.

With a 500 GB hard drive and 4 GB of RAM, the Vaio only covers the minimum standard of current notebooks. The system memory is on a single module, running in single-channel mode, without any significant performance decrease. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps23_w.html Sony VGP-BPS23/W battery

Processor
The Pentium B980 does not promise any miracles, but it delivers good performance in comparison to the competition. In the Cinebench R11.5 the CPU with 1.85 points is placed right between AMD A8-4500M (1.75 points) and the top model A10-4600M (2.0 points). In applications that do not require more cores, the B980 can even perform on par with the Core i3-2370M, running at the same clock frequency. In addition: the full performance potential is also available on battery power. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgpbps23_w.html Sony VGPBPS23/W battery

Sony also offers the SV-E1712 with the Ivy Bridge models Core i3-3110M, i5-3210M and i7-3632QM. Compared to the Pentium B980 and depending on the application, they promise a power increase of 5 to 30 (Core i3), 40 to 65 (Core i5), and 45 to 220% (Core i7).

System Performance
In addition to the processor power, the PCMark series of benchmarks by Futuremark are strongly influenced by the hard drive speed - not the ideal conditions for our test candidate. In the PCMark 7 it scored 1949 points and surpasses the HP Pavilion g7 only slightly. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps23_p.html Sony VGP-BPS23/P battery

But what do these values mean for the everyday use? In principle, even a cheap Pentium processor is enough for almost all desktop applications. In simple internet browsing and office applications, the user should be able to tell a difference with the significantly more expensive Core i7. Things change when it comes to demanding image or video editing - the B980 will still do the job, but is a lot slower. It is recommended to consider the upgrade to an SSD, which would reduce the loading times of the operating system and the applications. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgpbps23_p.html Sony VGPBPS23/P battery

Emissions

System Noise
Despite the relatively efficient components, the Vaio SV-E1712 is not among the quietest notebooks in its class. The fan is not only constantly active, but at 35.5 dB(A) in idle it is almost as loud as other devices under load. However, due to the uniform and low-frequency noise, at least the notebook remains bearable. The HP Pavilion g7 at 31.6 dB(A) shows us how this can be done better. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgpbps23_d.html Sony VGPBPS23/D battery

In 3DMark 06 the noise level rises only slightly to 37.9 dB(A). This fuels our impression that the fan control could have acted a bit more on the defensive side during office use. Under full load, meaning Prime95 and FurMark, we measured a maximum of 44.4 dB(A) - the Vaio would not be even close to this value during normal use or gaming.

In contrast to the noise level, the temperatures give us no cause for criticism. In idle, the values rarely exceed the ambient level, which is largely due to the somewhat overzealous fan. Operation on the lap is possible without any restrictions. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bpl18.html Sony VGP-BPL18 battery

While the temperature around the air outlet reached 45 oC under full load, most of the other areas of the notebook remained cool. This is particularly good news for the gamers, who will not have to worry about hot palm rests even after prolonged gaming sessions.

In the end, the question remains: how does the hardware fare in the case? After all, the Vaio can also be equipped with significantly faster and hungrier processors. The Pentium B980 causes the notebook no significant problems and at a maximum of 80 oC works with 2.2 GHz. The minimal throttling of 200 MHz is due to the unrealistically high load - this will not occur in practice. The graphics card seems to be completely safe from throttling, its core reaching a maximum of 70 oC. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps18.html Sony VGP-BPS18 battery

Speakers
Large grills, but with nothing behind them: the stereo speakers of the SV-E1712 can be described this way (slightly exaggerated). They are relatively loud, but not particularly good. The sound lacks bass and is flat. If possible, external speakers or headphones should be used. Too bad - we expected more of a multimedia oriented notebook. We must note here that the competitors offering higher quality speakers are in at least one price class above our test candidate. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bpl26.html Sony VGP-BPL26 battery

Battery Life

Power Consumption
As we mentioned earlier, Sony has not installed AMD’s power saving technology Enduro. This leads to unnecessarily high consumption in idle. At 12.2 to 17 W it fares worse than the competitors - we reckon at least 3 W are due to the constantly active Radeon GPU.

Although the graphics chip and the processor are not manufactured by the latest process, the Vaio fares well under load with 46 W (3DMark 06). During the stress test, this value rose to the still acceptable 62 W. Overall, the energy consumption is on par with the HP Pavilion g7, which offers a somewhat stronger graphics solution. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps26.html Sony VGP-BPS26 battery

The power supply provides a maximum of 75 W, which seems appropriate in view of our measurements.

Battery Life
Many manufacturers have already shown that even a small 44 Wh battery in conjunction with an energy efficient system can produce considerable battery life. Unfortunately the Vaio SV-E1712 does not meet these conditions, as we already described in the Power Consumption section.

We begin with Battery Eater Reader’s test (minimum brightness, energy saving mode, wireless modules off): without any load, the battery is out in just under 4 hours. There can be no comparison to the Pavilion g7, which easily lasts double that time. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps26a.html Sony VGP-BPS26A battery

Even in the more practical WLAN test (150 cd/m², energy saving mode), the Vaio does not fare better. Although the difference with the competitor from HP shrinks, the 2 hours and 36 minutes is not an excellent value.

In order to increase battery life, the manufacturer has restricted the clock frequency of both the core and the memory of the graphics card to 400 MHz. Despite these measures, the Battery Eater Classic test (maximum brightness, high performance mode, wireless modules on) finished in just 52 minutes. You should therefore give up the idea of playing games on battery power. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bpl19.html Sony VGP-BPL19 battery

The Sony Vaio SV-E1712F1EW did not run through our test course perfectly, but showed rock solid overall performance, and proved: nowadays, there are attractive notebooks that do not cost a lot and have sufficient capabilities for a number of everyday tasks.

Many budget notebooks lack acceptable workmanship or stability. Sony also had to make economies here and there and has not used expensive aluminum. Nonetheless, the simple, but not cheap-looking, case manages to surpass many similar or higher priced alternatives. In combination with the properly good input devices, the Vaio makes for a good office notebook as well. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps19.html Sony VGP-BPS19 battery

But how does it fare with playing movies or games? Unfortunately, the 17-inch notebook has left us with mixed feelings. Film fans will be disappointed mostly with the tight viewing angles of the display and the weak speakers. The latest gaming hits can only be played smoothly on low to medium settings, which was expected of the hardware components. http://www.askbattery.com/sony-vgp-bps19_s.html Sony VGP-BPS19/S battery

All of this may be excused with the low price of less than 550 Euros (~$700). Sony definitely should have included the missing Endure support as well as fixed the somewhat disturbing fan in idle state. Possible alternatives, such as the HP Pavilion g7, are also not free from weaknesses and perform worse in other disciplines. Ultimately, the buyer should choose the device that meets their own personal requirements.
